Obteined in 1939 by Snyder and Harmon by crossing the Flame Tokay and Alphonse Lavallé grapes. It is very popular in Italy especially in Apulia, Sicily and Lazio regions.
AMPELOGRAPHIC CHARACTERS
Cardinal has large sized bunches, about 30 – 40 cm. long. The berry is a dark black/purple colour, medium – large, round – shaped with a medium-thickness pruinous peel. Crisp, sweet pulp with a neutral flavour.
CULTIVATION CHARACTERS
The vigour is good and the fertility is about 1,5. It prefers very vigorous rootstocks but not long pruining , the “TENDONE” is the best training system for this vine. It has a good resistance to diseases but because of its earliness, it may be moderately susceptible to mildew.
PRODUCTION AND RIPENING
The production is good and constant.
The ripening is early: beginning of August.
