Notes
Aglianico is a red vine, especially diffused in Italy (in Basilicata and in Campania district in province of Avellino). It has old origins, probably introduced in Italy by the Greek people about VI –VII century b.C. Its name can rise from Eleanico, that is the coming from the old city of Elea, situated on the Tyrrhenian coast of Lucania. The introduction of this vine in the Italic cultivation can also be attributed to Hellenes people, on the Ionic coast of this region.
AMPELOGRAPHIC CHARACTERS
Medium bunch, more or less compact, conical or cylindrical with evident wings, medium round blue-black grape it can be separated with difficulty; the peel is pruinose and compact; the pulp is tastless, juicy, acidulous.
CULTIVATION CHARACTERS
It prefers hilly fields of volcanic, clayey, calcareous origins. It presents a good tolerance to disease, especially to mildew, but during rainy years and in water stagnation areas it is sensitive to grape downy mildew (Peronospora). It does not tolerate high summer temperatures and prolonged drought. It adapts itself to every kind of growing and pruning, but it prefers the short growing shape.
PRODUCTION AND VINTAGE
The quantity of production is medium, the maturity is a bit late in the first half of October.
WINE CHARACTERS
The wine has a ruby red colour more or less intense. It has a dry, sapid, tasty flavour that is better after a fair ageing old in an oak barrel thanks to the high alcohol content and the good level of total acidity.
