Notes
That variety of vine from Apulia dominates on the great red wines of Salento and South of Italy. This vine, whose berry is black has uncertain origins, perhaps it was introduced by the Greek people in the Jonic area (but for long time it was considered only a blending wine). Its name comes from the dialectal word “niuru maru” for the typical black colour of the grape and the typical bitterish taste of the wine. It is really diffused in Apulia particularly in the provinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto.
AMPELOGRAPHIC CHARACTERS
The bunch is medium, short and compact truncate cone-shaped, rarely winged. The grape is medium-big, about oval with a pruinose, consistent black-purple peel.
CULTIVATION CHARACTERS
It adapts itself to different forms of growing: “Tendone”, “Alberello”, “Spalliera”. Generally it resists all diseases but it does not resist Botritis very well during the rainy autumns.
PRODUCTION AND VINTAGE
It has an abundant and constant production. It is suitable for any kind of growing; the ripening comes about during the third decade of September and the first one of October.
WINE CHARACTERS
The wine is deep red, dense, alcoholic with a typical pleasant, herby, harmonic, full taste, high class. It is also the basis of the best rose wines produced in Salento area. |
