Notes
It is a black berry species of vine. Its name originates from the earliness of ripening of the plant in all its stages from the period of germination, to the flowering, to the beginning of the ripening of vines until the ripening of the grape. Some people think that it’s originates from Apulia where it is widely diffused; other people think that it has Dalmatian origins and that after it was imported in Apulia afterwards. From these grapes you obtain a red wine with a big quantity of anthocyanin, the real blood of Apulia land.

AMPELOGRAPHIC CHARACTERS
It has a medium, cone-cylindrical shaped, half compact, winged bunch; the grape is medium with a blue colour. It has a medium-thickness and pruinose peel, the pulp is juicy with a winey colour and special flavour.

CULTIVATION CHARACTERS
It prefers clayey and calcareous soils with a medium texture. It gives great quantity of grapes every year. It is not very resistant to rottenness and spring hoar-frosts. Moreover it tolerates well enough dangerous diseases for grapes like mildew.

PRODUCTION AND VINTAGE

The production is good, constant and good quality. The system of growing is “Alberello” or Espalier with 4 or 5 spurs. The ripening begins about the beginning of September.

WINE CHARACTERS

The wine has a high alcohol content (lowest is 14°) and it has a ruby red colour with a purple aromatic bottom with a full sweet flavour. Until not long age it was a strong wine used for blending but during the last years thanks the work of some winemakers this vine can give really different kind of wines of the best quality. The so called “Primitivo” has an important role among these DOC Apulia wines: Manduria Primitivo, Gioia del Colle Primitivo and Apulia Aleatico.
